If Not for the Cat

by Jack Prelutsky

If not for the cat,

And the scarcity of cheese,

I could be content.

In Honor of National Dog Day: My Dog May Be a Genius

My Dog May Be a Genius
by Jack Prelutsky

My dog may be a genius,
and in fact there’s little doubt.

He recognizes many words,
unless I spell them out.

If I so much as whisper “walk,”
he hurries off at once

to fetch his leash…it’s evident
my dog is not a dunce.

I can’t say “food” in front of him,
I spell f-o-o-d,

and he goes wild unless I spell
his t-r-e-a-t.

But recently this tactic
isn’t working out too well.
I think my d-o-g has learned
to s-p-e-l-l.

You can adopt a genius dog in my etsy shop:

My Frog and His Frog Blog

My Frog Does Not Waste Precious Time

by Jack Prelutsky

My frog does not waste precious time
just sitting on a log.

He’s learned to use the Internet,
and now he has a blog.

It’s filled with tips on how to hop,
and how to catch a fly,

on things that frogs can do to keep
their skins from getting dry.

My frog has hints on where to find
the finest lily pads,

and writes in great detail about
the latest froggy fads.

He tells of different ways to croak,
and how to act in bogs…

it’s boring for most people,
but it fascinates most frogs.

Poor Potatoes!

by Jack Prelutsky

Poor potatoes underground
never get to look around,

do not have a chance to see
butterfly or bumblebee.

Poor potatoes never look

at the fishes in the brook,

never see the sunny skies –
what a waste of all those eyes!

Butterflies, bumblebees, and eyes... on eBay.

Happy Happier Happiest Elephants (and a Sad One)

Happy etsy elephants

Happy eBay elephants

And here's a less happy elephant:

It's Hard to Be an Elephant
By: Jack Prelutsky

It's hard to be an elephant,
enormous, broad and tall.
I can't attend the cinema,
the seats are all too small.
It's practically impossible
for me to board a bus,
the tired often flatten,
and the driver makes a fuss.

I'm ushered out of luncheonettes,
the waitresses are rude.
They fume, "We cannot feed you,
for you'll finish all our food."
I'm drawn to the piano,
but I'm daunted when I play,
I tend to be ungainly,
and my ears get in the way.

My trunk is far too powerful,
no sooner do I sneeze
than windows crack and shatter
from the impact of the breeze.
I'm plagued by a peculiar,
purely pachydermal plight -
I find no socks and underwear
that fit precisely right.

Happy Valentine's Day from the Pets

I Made My Dog a Valentine

By Jack Prelutsky
I made my dog a valentine,
she sniffed it very hard,

then chewed on it a little while
and left it in the yard.

I made one for my parakeets,
a pretty paper heart,
they pulled it with their claws and beaks
until it ripped apart.

I made one for my turtle,
all he did was get it wet,

I wonder if a valentine
is wasted on a pet.

A Frog, a Stick, and a Whole Lot of Ladybugs

by jack prelutsky

A frog, a stick

a shell, a stone

a paper clip,
a chicken bone.

a feather quill

a piece of string
a lady bug,

a beetle wing
a greenish wad
of bubble gum

assorted keys
and cookie crumbs.

a maple leaf,
a candy bar,
a rubber band
a model car.
potato chips,

and soggy fries
plus something
i can't recognize.

a broken watch
a plastic cow...

that's what's inside
my pockets now.

ladybugs, feathers, and a whole lot more
