I Made My Dog a Valentine

I made my dog a valentine,
she sniffed it very hard,
then chewed on it a little while
and left it in the yard.
I made one for my parakeets,
a pretty paper heart,
they pulled it with their claws and beaks
until it ripped apart.
I made one for my turtle,
all he did was get it wet,
I wonder if a valentine
is wasted on a pet.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE Prelutsky's humor! His was a great little poem with which to highlight your festive jewelry! As I thought about Jack's dilemma, I realized that his problem was simply the TYPE of valentines he was making for his pets, rather than their ingratitude or carelessness. I'm ADVOCATING for our pets (sputter, giggle, wink)! They might appreciate valentines more than humans (okay, maybe the TYPE of valentines given to friends, sweethearts, spouses and such would dictate the behavior or outcome as well). But this is all in silly FUN! ~S.W.
I MADE MY PET A VALENTINE

I made my cat a valentine,
so furry and bright red.
Most days she bats it all around,
then snuggles it in bed.
With rubber bands I made a ball
and tossed it with great zeal!
My puppy loves his valentine;
he's playing with it still!
My friend I gave a valentine
with sparkles, lace, and glue.
He left it on the counter top
for just a day or two.
I've had a small epiphany,
(now isn't that great luck?) --
That making valentines for pets
gives more bang for the buck!
