The Great Hippo Couplet Contest

Show of hands.  Who wants to win a hippo charm?

Is it you?

Here's what you do.  I've been writing hippo couplets for a while, and, while I'm not out of rhymes, I'd love to see some of yours.  So go ahead and write a hippo couplet (or two or three) and post in the Comments section.

On Monday, July 11th, at 9pm PDT,  while the hippos charms watch to make sure I'm not cheating, I'll pull a name from the entrants and that hippo poet laureate will will a hippo charm.

So rhymers, start your engines.  Plenty of hippo charms here and here for inspiration.

Here's today's couplet:

His nose and ears have special flaps
That close for submerged hippo naps.

Some past couplets to inspire you.

However can a hippo run?
His hide alone weighs half a ton.

Consider the mouth of the great hippopotamus.
His jaws, if he wanted, could swallow a lot of us.

His hide?  Half a ton.  His girth?  Enormous.
But in terms of dining, he's quite the conformist.

With salad for snacks, dinner, luncheon and breakfast.
To switch him to pasta, you'd need an exorcist.

You'll find him in Zambia, Swaziland, Rwanda
Running as fast as your Grandma's old Honda.

And if hippo catches you, here's some advice:
You'd best climb a tree.  Jogging hippos aren't nice.

Now get couplet-ing!

  1. I'm not sure if this is a couplet, but I'll try.

Baby Hippos are cute, as cute as they come.
But, watch out for mother, she weighs a ton!

  2. Ode, or couplet, to Schmedley the skulking skunk!
    Brinkley

    Schmedley thinks he's completely autonomous
Until he encounters our pet hippopotamus

  3. What fun, and so many cute hippos! Here is my entry.

    My spaghetti bowl....it was bottomless!
But, Oy I feel like a hippopotamus.

  4. I just love the hippos! Here is my best stab at a couplet:

Consider the hide of this humble beast:

Better pet him nice or you could be his feast!

He glides elegantly swiftly he goes,
Along the river bed on his tippie toes!

The river horse a beautiful beast,
and oh so partial to a midnight feast.

    just thought of another,

The hippo is happy wallowing in the mud,
he lands in the puddle with a plop and a thud!

  7. The magnificent hippo, sized super-grand,
a ballerina in the water, but not on the land!

A hippo's mouth gets a lot of attention,
due to its jaw's incredible hyper-extension!

A hippo's size is no joking matter!
If you ate as much, you, too, would get fatter!
