A Diá de Los Muertos Adventure

Day of the Dead, or Diá de Los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Latin American countries and is especially popular in Mexico.



The holiday celebrates those who have died. It is believed that souls of the dead return to visit their loved ones.   



Diá de Los Muertos is celebrated on November 1 and 2 and is a time of happiness and celebration. 



Traditionally, sugar skulls, called calaveras, are made and used both for decoration and for consumption.

How to Make Calaveras (Sugar Skulls)

1. Take a pound of sugar.  Add enough water to make a syrup.  Heat it over medium heat until it forms a thick syrup.
   

   
   
2. Pour the syrup onto a cookie sheet, and stir it to cool it down.  
    
   
3. When it is the consistency of play-dough, it's ready to be worked.  Form small balls by rolling the sugar mixture between your hands.
    
   
4. Squeeze and pinch the ball into a semblance of a skull shape.
    
   
5. Use your finger to poke in eye sockets and a mouth. 
    
   
6. Let is cool some more.
    
   
7. When they have cooled completely, decorate further with icing.
